Illuminated Brass

We discussed illuminated world maps in a previous post. In today's example, we feature an illuminated map with a unique topping, distinct from stainless steel. The world map shown in today's picture is the illuminated brass world map—a sophisticated wall deco that can elevate the ambiance of any high-end interior.

A golden metal alloy

The brass used for the world map in the example consists of approximately 70% copper and 30% zinc. This blend of metals imparts the brass with its golden appearance, which pairs beautifully with dark-colored walls, such as deep blue or black. However, this particular alloy lacks corrosion resistance, necessitating multiple layers of varnish for protection. The varnish serves to shield the brass from moisture, other liquids, and even the mild acids from people's fingertips.

From the close-up photo, you can observe the details of the map. Even the contours of smaller countries such as the Netherlands are cut with remarkable precision. You may also notice the absence of engraved country borders throughout the piece. This is due to the limitations of the fiber laser's frequency on this type of metal, unlike the stainless steel. Nevertheless, even without these engraved borders, the map remains visually impressive.

Cold white lighting

The brass map featured in this photo is illuminated using an acrylic layer sandwiched between the brass top layer and a supporting layer of corten steel underneath. Unlike traditional methods of placing LED lights behind the map, this setup ensures a diffused lighting effect across the contours of all continents. By incorporating the acrylic layer, ugly LED strips are concealed when viewing the map from the side. Also, when looking form the front you'll see a more even glow compared to using regular LED strips at the back.
For this brass world map, the client opted for a cold white colour rather than warm white, adding to the modern aesthetic of the piece.
